In this project, we were interested in exploring the multilayering of materials and our ideas of architecture into creating a fashion piece.
Being inspired by Iris Van Herpen’s work, the garment was designed following ideas of organic lines with layering and framing.
This garment also tests ideas of combining a bio-mateial, chitosan (in yellow) which is extracted from shrimp shells. This experience was fruitful because it allowed our team te leverage our experience of architectural design while learning ways to complement it with scientific studies of materials as well as understanding the anatomy of the human body in order to be able to design for it.
Techniques that were used to achieve this product included laser cutting leather, casting chitosan, silk printing, and sewing. The exercise following that was bringing these ideas back into architecture through studying a façade system which highlights the lessons learned during production.
